Kenya’s telecommunications giant, Safaricom, has emphasised its commitment to sustainable development. This was echoed in their latest Sustainability Business Report. The 12th account first notes the implication of a sustainable business to the firm. Themed’ ‘PATHWAY TO A PURPOSE-LED TECHNOLOGY COMPANY’ highlights Safaricom’s role in transforming stakeholders’ lives. It scientifically explains the firm’s success while drawing attention to the setbacks. One notable contribution is the firm’s employability role, totaling 1.2 million jobs while generating over Ksh.909.5 billion shillings into the country’s economy. This is in addition to Ksh.311 billion shillings accrued in revenue for the financial year 2023.
The report credits the contributions to the value Safaricom has created for customers, agents, and merchants through their mobile phone-based money transfer service, payments, and micro-financing service, M-PESA, as well as the growth in economic impact created through Safaricom’s capital and operational expenditures during the period under review.
Regarding the report, Safaricom’s CEO, Peter Ndegwa, reiterated the report’s significance. “Sustainability reporting is not just a corporate responsibility but an essential pillar of our business strategy. Being accountable for Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) ensures that we remain committed to our core–Transforming Lives,” said Ndegwa.
