EABL has recorded a 55% drop in carbon emissions from their factories in 2022., as revealed in their 2023 sustainability report. According to their CEO, Jane Karuku, the achievement significantly boosts their steps towards net zero emissions. “Our commitment is to reduce our carbon footprint. We have a goal to achieve net zero emissions by 2030,” she said. Net-zero emissions refer to a balance between the amount of greenhouse gas emissions produced and the amount removed from the atmosphere.

The outcomes follow EABL’s initiative to launch biomass steam plants in Uganda and Kenya, increasing its renewable energy operations to 64.86 percent, up from 25.8 percent in 2022. The firm invested approximately Ksh.6.2 billion, with Ksh.1.6 billion going to the Ugandan branch and the rest to two branches in Kenya: Kisumu and Tusker plants.

CO2 emissions from manufacturing and construction industries in Kenya were 23.81% as of 2014. These figures represented the highest emissions in over 43 years.
