Prof. Anyang Nyong’o Appointed UN Advisor on Local Governments

The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o as an advisor to the UN Advisory Board on Local and Regional Governments. The Advisory Group is expected to advise the UN Secretary-General on issues involving local and regional governments’ engagement and make member States aware of decisions made and actions to be taken.

Prof. Nyong’o, currently serving his second term as Governor of Kisumu County, joins 14 other individuals in his role. The 15 members have been drawn from the Asia and Pacific region (2), Europe (3), Africa (3), North America (2), Latin America and the Caribbean (3), and the Middle East and North Africa (2).

The UN Advisory Board on Local and Regional Governments plays a critical role in strengthening the engagement of local and regional governments in intergovernmental and national planning processes. Moreover, it will advise the UN Secretary-General on local and regional governments’ engagement and action, enhance coordination and collaboration, and support the course corrections needed to achieve sustainable development goals.

Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o is a renowned scholar of Political Science. He has served in different portfolios in government, including as Minister for Planning and National Development. In his acceptance message, Prof. Nyong’o promised to do his best to promote the ideals and objectives of the United Nations in advancing the cause of local and regional governments.
